2018 Ford Escape Car Review

If you need an SUV that’s nimble enough for the crowded Akron streets and strong enough for your road trips to the lake near Cleveland, the Ford Escape is a worthy contender for Fairlawn area customers.

This 2018 Ford Escape car review should give you all the information you need to decide whether this compact SUV is right for you.

2018 Ford Escape Powertrain

As you can often expect from a Ford, the Escape does not skimp on engine options. There are three to choose from, with the standard 2.5L I-4 engine producing 168 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque.

This engine comes with a front-wheel drive (FWD) drivetrain and gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined fuel economy.

If you want maximum efficiency, consider an upgrade to the available 1.5L EcoBoost® I-4 with Auto Start-Stop technology. By turning off the engine during prolonged stops at traffic lights and stop signs, this engine will get you an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 26 mpg with FWD.

It also produces 179 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, but if you really want to kick up the power, go for the available 2.0L EcoBoost® I-4 engine, which generates 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.

Both EcoBoost® engines come with FWD but also make the Intelligent 4-wheel drive (4WD) system available, providing a precise blend of handling and traction, which is ideal for the kind of winters we get here.

Cargo Space

For a compact SUV, the Ford Escape is very spacious, with 98.7 cubic feet of passenger volume. If you’re bringing the whole crew along, all five of you can sit comfortably while still allowing for 34 cubic feet of space behind the second row.

If you fold the second row down flat, however, you can accommodate 68 cubic feet of cargo. The available Hands-Free Foot-Activated Liftgate gives you easy access to your luggage with just a wave of the foot under the rear bumper.

You’re free to pack it to the brim, too, because the standard rearview camera means a clear view of the space directly behind your vehicle when parking or backing out of a space (but always be sure to thoroughly check your surroundings).

To further aid with parking, especially when toting a full load, the available Reverse Sensing System provides an audible warning when approaching an object too closely while backing up.

Ford Escape Technology Features

In 2018, cars can sometimes feel like computers on wheels, and the Ford Escape is no different. Not only will you have SYNC® as a standard infotainment system for hands-free smartphone connectivity and voice-activated control of music streaming, texting and calling, you’ll also have the available remote start.

This allows you to get your car started and warming up or cooling down, so it’s always the perfect temperature by the time you climb inside.

You’ll also have several available smart safety features, like the available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which monitors your side and rear blind spots for other vehicles when merging or navigating a crowded parking lot.
